Council told to keep mangroves

Removing dead mangroves along the Burnett River could increase the impacts of future flooding.

Environmental research group Mangrove Watch from James Cook University surveyed the river last week, and found many of the mangroves have died from being submerged in January’s flood.

According to Coordinator Jock Mackenzie it doesn’t mean the Bundaberg Regional Council should remove them.

Besides providing shelter for new mangroves to grow, he says they’re effective in slowing down flood water velocity.
